Tobacco-free Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine
Hello all,
It’s official: the Euro 2012 will be tobacco-free. UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) has been working with WHO Tobacco-Free Initiative, WHO Europe and NGO partners in Poland and Ukraine, World Heart Federation and Healthy Stadia Network to make this happen.

World Heart Federation announcement: http://bit.ly/nM5JBf
This is a good occasion to pass messages on development and NCD prevention: Ukraine has some of the most catastrophic NCD situations around, and the World Bank has called an alarm about this: http://bit.ly/pyt6vA
The starting point of this was to get UEFA to put mention of smoke-free policy (of the cities where matches are to be played) in its bidding criteria. This is something that any organization that sponsors big events can do, sending the message to cities and countries that smoke-free policy makes them more attractive as event venues. This way you can have an impact on all cities bidding, not just bid winners.
