Call for papers: Global health beyond 2015
The Swedish Society of Medicine, in collaboration with the Lancet and Global Health Action, are calling for papers to be presented at the "Global Health – beyond 2015" symposium in Stockholm, Sweden on 4 April 2013. The topics focus on NCDs, health inequalities, and social determinants of health. Global Health Action.

Australia: Cutting salt could save 6000 lives
Reducing salt intake across the country by three grams a day could save 6000 lives a year, according to the National Heart Foundation of Australia. The average Australian consumes around nine grams of salt a day, three grams more than the recommended amount for healthy people. "As about three quarters of the salt eaten by Australians comes from processed foods rather than salt added at the table, the most effective way to cut salt is to change the ways foods are manufactured," said Dr. Robert Grenfell, Clinical Issues Director at the Heart Foundation. Bangladesh, Nepal: Team scales sea to summit for heart disease
Led by the Nepal Heart Foundation, a team of doctors, mountaineers, and educators are heading from the sea-level of Bangladesh to Mount Everest - the world's highest mountain - to raise awareness for heart disease. The Save Heart Expedition will hold advocacy events along the way, showing that people living at all altitudes can change their lifestyles to prevent heart disease. The team will also carry a special flag with messages related to seven factors for preventing heart disease - treating throat infections in children, eliminating tobacco use, healthy diets, physical activity, knowing your numbers, treating hypertension and diabetes, and controlling your emotions. The trek will include a diverse range of social and geographical groups. The Himalayan.

Cook Islands: Tobacco tax increase
The government is set to increase the tax on tobacco products in its next budget. Import levies on cigarettes and other forms of tobacco will increase by 33% annually over the next three years. Around 84% of all deaths on the Cook Islands are the result of non-communicable diseases, and the goal of the tax increase is to reduce cigarette consumption as well as increase long-term savings for the health ministry. Global: High blood pressure, diabetes warning
The WHO warned of alarming rates of hypertension and diabetes in developing countries in its annual publication, World Health Statistics. One in three adults across the world have high blood pressure (causing around half of all stroke and heart disease deaths) and one in 10 adults have diabetes. In some Western Pacific island nations, one in three adults have diabetes and in some African countries, nearly as many as 50% of adults have high blood pressure. The report also found that 12% of the world's population is obese, and that women in all parts of the world are more likely to be obese compared to men. This edition of the report is the first to include data from all member states on hypertension and raised blood sugar levels for both men and women. Reuters.

Global: NCD target adopted at World Health Assembly
WHO member states adopted the global target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from NCDs by 2025 during the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. "This is a landmark decision on the prevention and control of NCDs," said Timothy Armstrong, coordinator of Surveillance and Population-based Prevention in the Department of Chronic Diseases and Health Promotion at the WHO. "For the first time, we are moving away from aspirational goals to an action-based approach that will be anchored in quantifiable targets." Despite the achievement, many wanted additional targets included in the resolution, covering risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, physical activity, and nutrition. Mauritius: Ramping up smoking ban enforcement
Enforcing the ban on smoking in public places and workplaces, as well as strengthening regulations around the sale of cigarettes, according to Lormus Bundhoo, the Minister of Health and Quality of Live. Also, a new set of graphic warnings will appear on cigarettes packages. "Mauritius has one of the toughest tobacco legislation in the world," said Mr Bundhoo. "Mauritius was the first African country to implement graphic health warnings on cigarettes packages." Daily Nation.

Spain: Drop in smoking after law took effect
Tobacco consumption among the working population dropped 5% after a public smoking ban took effect, according to new research involving more than 413,000 people. Similarly, researchers found that a drop in the amount of tobacco consumed among those who continued to smoke. The smoking ban provided several groups of workers - such as catering workers - protection against secondhand smoke for the first time. "Progressive strictness of the smoking ban in public places is an extraordinarily useful measure in the fight against the tobacco epidemic in our country," according to the researchers. "The most important factors in giving up tobacco are regulatory and fiscal policies." Medical Xpress.

US: New York City seeks limit sales of large sodas
Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a ban on the sale of large-size sugar sweetened beverages in restaurants, movie theaters, delis, and similar venues. The ban would apply to drinks that contain more than 25 calories for every eight ounces of fluid, and would affect drinks that are larger than 16 ounces. Diet sodas or dairy-based drinks would not apply. Around 58% of New York City adults and 40% of school students are overweight or obese. Yahoo.

Australian guideline for prevention, diagnosis, and management of acute RHD
Guidelines that provides "clinicians with additional information on preventative action, diagnosis and management of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease." The guidelines also clarify "common questions and broadened the diagnosis criteria for probable acute rheumatic fever in high risk groups in order to assist clinicians when there are uncertain cases of acute rheumatic fever." IOM workshop summary report that "explored ideas and opportunities for supporting country-specific assessments of resource needs and planning of resource allocation for chronic diseases as part of the broader process of priority setting, decision making, and planning.
