Framingham Heart Study edition of Progress in CVD
[Editor's note: The entire edition of the most recent Progress in Cardiovascular Disease is devoted to the Framingham Heart Study. Dr. Henry Greenberg, Editor-in-Chief of the journal and member of ProCor's Advisory Council, worked with Elsevier to allow ProCor to provide free access to the articles we've reviewed in this edition. All this week our reviews and summaries will come from this edition. We are very grateful for Dr. Greenberg's work on our behalf, and we hope you enjoy the articles and reviews.]
Dear ProCor community,
I have been a fan of the Framingham Heart Study for decades. Its impact on U.S. health care has been enormous, both in how we practice medicine and how we view CVD as a public health challenge. The FHS has also been a powerful influence around the world and is considered one of the great contributions of American medicine. The history of FHS, however, reveals no effort to extend the influence beyond our borders. There were no formal training programs for investigators from other countries; no formal Framingham programs set up abroad to work with local public health infrastructure; and in spite of an exuberant publication policy, no "how to" books as a guideline for others.
How then did the news get out? This symposium is an attempt to answer that question. We are delighted by the enthusiastic and thoughtful contributions by all of the authors. The history of global CVD prevention has been advanced by their efforts.
We are also grateful to Elsevier and ProCor for arranging for this symposium to "go global" full text.
