Norway: Philip Morris suing over cigarette advertising ban

Philip Morris is suing Norway in an attempt to overturn the nation-wide ban on cigarette displays. Experts believe the lawsuit stands on shaky legal ground and is only meant to intimidate Norway and other countries with similar bans. Although Philip Morris claims the effects of display bans on smoking cessation are minimal, the company would not worry about such bans unless they believe the bans would hurt sales, according to John Banzhaf of Action on Smoking and Health. Similar bans exist in Iceland, Ireland, Canada, and New South Wales, Australia. ASH.
