Global: NCDs require a global response

The upcoming UN High Level Meeting provides a unique opportunity to respond to the global burden of NCDs, but will require a collaborative effort involving all stakeholders, according to Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization. "We need a UN [High Level Meeting] to raise awareness at the highest level, and stimulate an ‘all of society' response to address this most important public health challenge in global health," Dr. Periago said during her speech at a WHO planning meeting for the upcoming UN Meeting. The UN Meeting provides a unique policy window that can: put NCD prevention and control on the global development and economic agenda; stimulate a multi-sectoral response; decrease burdensome health costs; and increase growth and productivity prospects.
