US: New food plate image replaces pyramid

The federal government released a new food icon called MyPlate that serves as a reminder to eat healthy portions and food groups during meal time. The image, which shows proper portions of fruit, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy on a plate, is replacing the MyPyramid chart as the government's primary food group symbol. Consumers are encouraged to visit the MyPlate website to obtain detailed information and tools for dietary assessment, nutrition education, and ways to build healthier diets. The website also promotes the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which suggest controlled portions, increased fruits and vegetables, use of whole grains and fat-free milk, water consumption over sugary drinks, and decreased sodium.
