Global: WHO chief calls for unity in tobacco fight
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan called on countries to stand together against tobacco companies that are pushing to soften the countries' anti-smoking positions during a public health meeting in Geneva. "Tobacco is the only industry that produces products to make huge profits and at the same time damage the health and kill their consumers," she said, while also highlighting big tobacco's efforts against Australia, Norway, the US, and Uruguay. "How can we as an international community allow big tobacco to harass countries?" Her comments came after tobacco company Philip Morris recently announced legal action against the Australian government's new anti-tobacco legislation. The Washington Post.
