Global: NCD target adopted at World Health Assembly

WHO member states adopted the global target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from NCDs by 2025 during the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. "This is a landmark decision on the prevention and control of NCDs," said Timothy Armstrong, coordinator of Surveillance and Population-based Prevention in the Department of Chronic Diseases and Health Promotion at the WHO. "For the first time, we are moving away from aspirational goals to an action-based approach that will be anchored in quantifiable targets." Despite the achievement, many wanted additional targets included in the resolution, covering risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, physical activity, and nutrition. Several member states, including India, pushed for recognition and support for essential medicine targets. Intellectual Property Watch.
