Iran: Diabetes in Iranians

Approximately one-third of adults in Tehran have disturbed glucose tolerance or diabetes, according to a 9500-person study. The prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes, isolated impaired fasting glucose (IFG), isolated impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and combined IFG/IGT were 8.1%, 5.1%, 8.7%, 5.4%, and 4% in men and 10%, 4.7%, 6.3%, 7.6%, and 4.5% in women, respectively. The study recommends screening individuals with hypertension, abdominal obesity, family history of diabetes, and BMI of 25 or above.
